Do You Need an AMS or Multi-Material System to Use Filament Refills?
Updated September 25, 2026
No - a reusable spool and a refill work on a plain single-spool holder just as well as they do in an automated multi-material system like Bambu Lab's AMS. The spool itself doesn't know or care whether it's sitting in a basic spool holder or an automated feeder. What changes is what the feeder adds on top of that.
What a single spool holder gives you
- Physical support for the spool while it feeds filament to the extruder
- Nothing else - you manually select the material/color profile, and there's no automatic swapping, no per-color usage tracking, and no RFID/NFC reading even if the spool has a tag
What an AMS-style system adds
- Automatic material switching mid-print, for multi-color or multi-material models - this is the main reason these systems exist
- Auto material recognition on tagged spools (see RFID and NFC filament tags explained) - separate from whether the spool physically fits
- A specific spool size tolerance the assembled spool has to fall within, which is exactly the second question SpoolNook's checker asks separately from refill-to-spool fit - see AMS and feeder spool dimensions by brand
- Humidity control on some models, which matters more for moisture-sensitive materials - see how to store filament refills
So do you need one?
Only if you actually want the automation - multi-color/multi-material prints without manually swapping spools mid-job, or automatic material detection. If you're printing single-color, single-material parts and don't mind selecting the profile yourself, a reusable spool and refill setup works identically well on a basic holder. Buying an AMS-style system purely to "make refills work" isn't necessary - refills aren't AMS-dependent.
If you do have one, check the fit separately
Because the feeder adds its own size tolerance on top of the refill-to-spool fit, use the compatibility checker with your exact feeder model selected - a spool that fits together perfectly can still be a millimeter or two outside your feeder's supported range, and that's a completely separate result from whether the refill mounted correctly.
