Why Your Filament Refill Won't Fit: 5 Common Causes
Updated September 25, 2026
A refill that doesn't fit almost always comes down to one of five things. Work through them in order - the first two are the most common by far.
1. Wrong generation, right brand
The single most common cause: the refill is designed for a newer or older version of the spool than the one you have. Manufacturers change hub diameter, width, or the locking mechanism between generations without always changing the product name. See how to identify your reusable spool - if you can't confirm the exact generation, don't assume it's the newest one.
2. Wrong brand entirely
Fit between brands is not guaranteed and is directional - a refill from Brand A fitting Brand B's spool doesn't mean the reverse is true, and it doesn't mean a third brand fits either. Check the exact pairing in the compatibility checker rather than assuming "reusable spools are all the same size."
3. Core swollen from moisture
Cardboard-core refills (common on Prusament's older spool line, for example) can swell slightly if stored somewhere humid, making a normally-fitting core feel tight or refuse to seat. If a refill that should fit is unexpectedly snug, this is worth ruling out before assuming a generation mismatch - see how to store filament refills.
4. Locking mechanism doesn't engage even though the diameter looks right
A close diameter match doesn't guarantee the mechanism catches - clips, snap rings, or notches have to align, not just the core width. This is why SpoolNook's checker distinguishes "Fit documented" from a raw measurement match: a similar diameter is a signal, not proof. If the refill slides on but doesn't click or lock, measure both the core and the spool hub yourself - see how to measure a refill's inner diameter.
5. It fits the spool but not your feeder
Don't confuse a spool-to-refill mismatch with a spool-to-feeder mismatch - they're separate problems. A refill can seat perfectly on its spool and the assembled spool can still be outside your AMS or feeder's supported width/diameter range. Check both independently in the checker; selecting a feeder alongside your spool and refill gives you both results at once.
Still stuck?
If you've ruled out all five and still can't explain the fit, tell us what you're seeing - a documented, repeatable measurement from a case nobody's recorded yet is exactly what improves this dataset.
