Prusament Refill Compatibility Across Spool Generations
Updated September 22, 2026
Prusa redesigned the Prusament spool in 2025 around the OpenPrintTag NFC standard, and the two spool generations are not interchangeable for refills in both directions. Old cardboard-core refills do not fit the new NFC spool. New refills can technically be mounted on an old cardboard-core spool, but Prusa itself doesn't recommend it.
The two spool generations
| Cardboard-core spool (pre-2025) | OpenPrintTag / NFC spool (2025-) | |
|---|---|---|
| Identification | Black plastic side plates clipped onto a cardboard tube | Large circular NFC tag, readable through the assembled spool in any orientation |
| Refill method | Pull the plastic sides apart (soak if stiff), then reattach onto a new refill core | 3 mm slimmer body; refill mounting differs from the cardboard-core version |
Prusament also sells grey "advanced material" spools whose sides are glued to the cardboard core - not refillable in either generation.
Refill compatibility across generations
- Old (cardboard-core) refill on the new NFC spool: mismatch, per Prusa. Prusa's own blog post announcing the redesign states plainly that "old refills don't fit the new spools as they're wound on a paper core."
- New (OpenPrintTag) refill on the old cardboard-core spool: fits, but Prusa doesn't recommend it. The same post states new refills "can technically fit on old paper cores," but warns of "a larger clearance, which increases the risk of errors."
What we couldn't confirm
Prusa's announcement didn't publish exact new outer-diameter or width numbers for the redesigned spool - only that it's "3 mm slimmer" than before. We've recorded that as a research gap rather than estimating a figure.
